Chapters lose tax-exempt status over a form nobody told them about
Most Greek chapters are 501(c)(7) organizations that must file a Form 990 series return every year – and many new treasurers have never heard of it. Miss three consecutive years and the IRS automatically revokes your chapter's tax-exempt status. Because the deadline depends on your fiscal year and the filing history lives with whoever was treasurer three officers ago, chapters routinely find out about the problem only after it's happened.
Your return, prepared from your books
Dueflow tracks your chapter's fiscal year and filing deadlines, alerts the current treasurer before each due date, and monitors your exemption status against IRS records year-round. Because your revenue already flows through Dueflow, the gross-receipts numbers that determine whether you file a 990-N, 990-EZ, or full 990 are computed from your ledger – Dueflow assembles the workpapers, a CPA can review and sign off, and your officer files the return.
Deadline alerts
Filing reminders based on your chapter's actual fiscal year, sent to whoever holds the treasurer seat today.
Exemption monitoring
Year-round tracking of your chapter's tax-exempt status against the IRS auto-revocation list and Publication 78, with early warnings before revocation risk builds.
Workpapers from your books
Gross receipts, revenue-line, and balance-sheet workpapers built from your Dueflow ledger – the inputs a 990 needs, without spreadsheet archaeology.
Guided preparation & CPA review
Plain-English guidance on which form applies (990-N, 990-EZ, or full 990), what goes in it, and a review queue where a CPA can check and sign off before your officer files.
History that survives turnover
Filing records live with the chapter, not with whoever was treasurer three officers ago.
Nationals-wide visibility
National organizations see filing status across every chapter, before revocation risk builds anywhere.
How 990 support works
From fiscal year to filed return, the work happens where your books already live.
Tell us your fiscal year
Your filing deadline follows from your fiscal year end – set it once and it's tracked from then on.
Dueflow watches the calendar
Whoever holds the treasurer seat gets alerted well before each due date – no institutional memory required.
Your numbers assemble themselves
Gross receipts and totals come from the revenue already flowing through Dueflow, not spreadsheet archaeology.
File the right form, guided
Plain-English guidance on whether you file the 990-N e-Postcard, 990-EZ, or full 990 – with workpapers a CPA can review and your officer files.
The three-year trap
The IRS automatically revokes a chapter's tax-exempt status after three consecutive missed Form 990 filings. No warning letter arrives at the chapter house; the clock just runs. And because most chapters turn over their treasurer every year, the person who filed last (or didn't) is usually gone by the time it matters – which is exactly how organizations discover the problem years too late, when a bank or national asks for proof of exemption.
This is a deadline-tracking problem, not an accounting problem – and deadline tracking is what software is for. Dueflow pins the obligation to the chapter itself: the current treasurer gets warned early, every year, no matter how many officer transitions have happened since the last filing.
Your books already know the answer
Which form a chapter files depends mostly on gross receipts: $50,000 or less usually means the five-minute 990-N e-Postcard, larger chapters file the 990-EZ or full 990. For a chapter running on spreadsheets, even answering "what were our gross receipts?" is a project.
For a chapter on Dueflow, that number already exists – dues, store sales, and every other dollar of revenue are on the books. The 990 work collapses into confirming numbers instead of reconstructing them, with a CPA review step before your officer signs and files.
